Get your Walkman ready and suit up: a Guardians of the Galaxy game is coming in October.
Announced at E3 this week, Square Enix is releasing a single player Guardians of the Galaxy game. In the game players will take control of Star-Lord and fight alongside the other Guardians. The story-mode will include choices that change the story, but won’t allow you to control the other Guardians. The trailer is below:
The gameplay in the trailer looks very fun and apparently will be influenced by an 80’s style soundtrack. Peter Quill “can call a ‘team huddle’ and choose a song to inspire them in combat, enhancing the group with various boosts and a glowing energy effect.” Just like the movie series, music is going to be integral to the game.
The trailer also seems to capture the comedy of the movies, as well as the signature style. All of the characters look a little closer to their comic book counterparts, especially Drax. Some will be a little disappointed to not control all their favorite Guardians (like my own personal favorite, Rocket) but the game will still have teamwork mechanics. Quill can instruct the Guardians how to attack and each will have their own unique abilities.
Fans are hoping that the game is a bigger success than Square Enix’s last Marvel output: Marvel’s Avengers. The 2020 game had lots of fanfare, but disappointed fans with repetitive gameplay and a thin base game. While it was exciting to be able to control the different Avengers, the missions amounted to little more than button smashing to eliminate A.I.M. robots. Here’s hoping the signature style of Guardians of the Galaxy gives this game a warmer reception.
Guardians of the Galaxy drops on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on October 26, 2021.
